Sit comfortably by the fire, enjoy the warmth, eat, and have fun together. Whether it's grilled marshmallows, sausages, or crispy campfire bread, cooking over an open fire is a blast. Choose a suitable spot together. Keep at least 3 meters away from branches or other materials. Tip: While the dough is resting, you can take a hike through the woods. Collect dry, small, thick sticks. Willow or hazelnut branches are best for making campfire bread. They are non-toxic and burn slowly. Here’s the recipe.

What you'll need

  • Yeast
  • 500 ml warm water
  • 1 kg flour
  • About 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 2 tablespoons oil

How it works

  1. The basic recipe for classic campfire bread is quick and easy. Dissolve the yeast in 500 ml of lukewarm water. The yeast helps the dough rise.

  2. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 kg of flour, and 2 tablespoons of oil. Knead everything into a dough. The campfire bread dough should not stick to your hands or the bowl. Add more flour or water if necessary. Now let the dough rise for at least one hour.

  3. You can easily enhance the campfire bread dough. Refine your dough with olives, bacon, or herbs as you like. Simply work the flavor ingredients into the dough or enjoy the classic version.

  4. Divide the dough into portions. Shape them into long, thin snakes and wrap them around your sticks. Press the dough lightly together so it doesn’t slip off the stick. This ensures even cooking.

  5. Bake the campfire bread over the glowing embers of the fire. Tip: Don’t hold the dough over the open flame. Otherwise, the crust will darken too soon while the inside remains raw. Now enjoy your delicious treat!
