On your next walk, you might find your next whale, ray, or lanternfish waiting for you. Look closely at the shapes of the stones. Which stone looks like a fish? Which one reminds you of a ray or an octopus? Place the stones on a sheet of paper and draw fins, tails, or tentacles directly on the paper. This way, you create fun sea creatures from stone, paper, and pen. Draw eyes and a face directly on the stone. If you like, decorate the body with colors, stripes, or dots. This activity helps you practice careful observation, plan your picture, and find your own solutions. Each stone is different, which is why every sea creature looks unique. In the end, you might even create a whole underwater scene with many sea inhabitants.

How it works

Collect flat stones in various shapes. Place the stones on a sheet of paper. Turn them around. What do their shapes remind you of? Draw fins, tails, or tentacles on the paper with a black pen. The stones will become the bodies of your sea creatures.
Draw eyes and a face directly on the stone. Your sea creature will already look alive.
Paint your stones in any colors you like. Stripes, dots, or waves make your sea creature special.
