What you'll need

  • Cash for payment
  • Knife usually available on site
  • Optional measuring tape
  • Optional compass

How it works

  1. Sunflowers have many parts. Can you identify the petals, the stem, and the center where the seeds are? Point to the different parts of the sunflower and name them!

  2. Sunflowers can be different sizes! Measure the sunflower with your hand. How many hands tall is it?

  3. Sunflowers are not just yellow. The leaves are green, and the seeds in the center are brown. Find all the colors you can see in the sunflower.

  4. Sunflowers turn towards the sun. Can you do that too? Slowly turn from east to west, just like the sunflowers do during the day.

  5. Look closely at the sunflowers and find the prettiest one! With the help of an adult, pick a sunflower. Which one did you choose and why?

  6. How many petals does your sunflower have? Count the petals of the picked sunflower. Is the number always the same in different sunflowers?

  7. Look at the center of the sunflower you picked! Do you see the seeds? Take some out and lay them out to dry. Next year in May, you will plant them, and new sunflowers will grow. You also collected seeds for the future today!
