Optical Illusion. Your Hand Performs a Trick.
Imagine tracing your hand on a piece of paper. It looks completely flat at first. But then something magical happens. With a pen and some lines, you make your drawing trick your eye. Suddenly, your painted hand appears to be coming out of the paper. In this drawing, you'll learn how lines work and why our brain sometimes sees things that aren't really there. In the end, you'll have a picture that amazes and you can explain how the trick works.
What you'll need
- A4 paper
- Thin black marker
- Felt-tip pens or colored pencils
- Your hand
How it works

Place your hand flat on the paper. Trace your hand with the thin marker. Take your time.

Now draw straight lines across the entire sheet. The lines should go over the background but not through the hand shape. Leave gaps in the hand. Straight lines tell your brain: The picture is flat.

Now look at the gaps in your hand. There are missing lines. Draw these lines curved. Connect all the lines neatly. Each curve connects exactly two straight lines. Your brain recognizes curved lines from round objects.

Look at your picture. Outside the hand, the lines are straight. Inside the hand, they are curved. Your brain compares both and thinks: The hand is bulging forward.

Now color in one straight line and the corresponding curved part in the hand. Take your time. Coloring makes the difference even clearer to your brain.

Hold your picture a little away from you. Move it slightly. Your hand now looks round, even though it isn't. That's the optical illusion.
