Christmas is getting closer, and what could be better than opening a little door every day? But why settle for doors when you can create your very own Advent calendar? One that’s way cooler than the store-bought ones and designed just the way you like it. So, roll up your sleeves and let’s get started: Today, you’ll make an Advent calendar from a birch branch, 24 screw hooks, and 24 small bags. Sounds exciting, right?

What you'll need

Branch (about 1 meter), e.g., birch
2 screws
Screwdriver
24 fabric bags
24 small screw hooks
String for hanging
Scissors
Fairy lights and pine greenery
24 small pieces of paper or number stickers
A marker
Drill (only with adults)

How it works

First, find a birch branch (about 1 meter long). The branch should be sturdy enough to hold the bags. Once you’ve found one, check if it’s clean. You can wipe it down with a cloth and let it dry.
Now, mark 24 evenly spaced points along the branch. This is where the screw hooks will go later. Also, mark two points at the ends of the branch to attach screws. These screws will hold the string so that the calendar can be hung up.
Now, attach the screws to both ends of the branch. These will hold the string so you can hang your Advent calendar on the wall or a hook.
Once all the hooks are securely in place, you’ve already completed the frame for your Advent calendar! Is everything stable? Perfect, then let’s continue.
You need 24 bags. If you don’t have any ready-made ones, you can also make small paper bags or tie fabric scraps together. Each bag should have a number from 1 to 24. Write the numbers on small pieces of paper with a marker or use stickers. Attach the numbers to the bags with glue or ties.
Now, hang the bags on the screw hooks. It looks beautiful! In the end, you’ll have a unique Advent calendar that not only looks great but will also soon be filled with surprises. Decorate your branch with a string of lights or some pine greenery.
