How to Turn an Eight into a Penguin

Imagine you're standing in a freezing, snow-white world. Ice sparkles everywhere, and suddenly a little penguin waddles by. Sounds magical, right? Today, you can create your own penguin from a very special shape: the number eight! You'll not only learn about shapes but also how simple ideas can turn into real masterpieces. What you'll need

White drawing paper
Colored pencils, orange and black
Scrap cardboard

How it works

Take a sheet of paper and draw a large eight with the black colored pencil. Trace the lines several times to make them bold. Do you know why the eight is so important? It's the perfect shape for a penguin's body. The top is the head, and the bottom is the belly. You can see that, right?
Now color the top circle of the eight completely black. This will be your penguin's head. Draw two wings on both sides of the bottom circle of the eight. You can let them hang down or draw them slightly raised, as if your penguin is happily waving.
Grab the orange pencil. Now your penguin gets a beak, a small triangle is enough. And for the feet, draw two semicircles at the bottom of the belly. Stick on a googly eye or draw one. This way, your penguin looks curiously into the distance, as if spotting an adventure.
Carefully cut out your penguin. Make sure to leave a small strip of paper at the bottom of the belly. Fold this strip back. This way, your penguin can stand securely on its ice floe later. You can already see how lively it becomes, right?
From the scrap cardboard, create the perfect ice floe. Color it with a white wax crayon so it looks like sparkling ice. Here you can be creative: Should the floe be big or small? Your penguin will be happy with any home.
Glue your penguin onto the ice floe with the folded strip. Press everything down well so it stands stable. And ta-da, your penguin stands bravely and proudly on its floe, ready for adventures in the icy world.
