Ghostly Paper Bag Lanterns

🎂 5 + years ⏱️ 30 min 📍 At home ⭐ easy

As it gets dark outside earlier, the time for little lights begins. White paper bags turn into glowing ghosts that fill your room with warm autumn light, perfect for Halloween and cozy afternoons. While crafting, you can decide how your ghosts look: smiling, cheeky, or sleepy. You'll learn to experiment with shapes, create faces, and bring your own ideas to life. Along the way, you'll train your patience, concentration, and creativity. And when the ghosts glow in the evening, a simple craft project becomes a moment that connects you and makes you proud.

What you'll need

  • White paper bags
  • A pair of scissors
  • A black felt-tip pen
  • A string of lights

How it works

  1. Take as many white paper bags as you have lights. You need one ghost for each light. Lay the bag flat in front of you, with the open side facing down. Now it's time to cut. Round off the top corners slightly on the right and left.

  2. Then, cut the open side at the bottom in a wavy pattern. This gives your ghost that typical fluttering edge. If you like, try out different wave patterns. Now it’s time to bring your bag to life! Take your felt-tip pen and draw a face. Big, small, cheeky, sad, or silly, you decide.

  3. Now it gets exciting! You have two options: If you like, you can thread the string of lights through the ghosts. Or you can cut the sides of the bag open and simply hang them over the bulbs.

  4. Once everything is ready, find a nice spot: by the window, on the shelf, or above the bed. Turn off the light and switch on your ghostly lanterns. Do you see how they glow? How the ghosts suddenly seem alive?
