What you'll need

Matchbox
Felt sheet (suitable for the size of the box)
Felt in various colors
Felting needle
Felting mat or foam
Cookie cutter or simple template
Optional: Finger protectors
Glue

How it works

Measure the top of the matchbox. Cut a rectangle from thick felt that fits perfectly on it. Place it on the box for a test.
Think of a design, like a fish, cat, or llama. A cookie cutter or a simple paper shape can help to start.
Place the felting mat, foam, or Styrofoam on the table. Put the thick felt on top and position your design on it. Place felt on top. Poke the felt with the felting needle. Work slowly. Stay calm. Put on finger protectors to avoid injury.
Poke until the design is firmly attached to the base. You'll know when the felt holds. Practice makes it easier.
Glue the finished felt piece onto the matchbox. Press it down well and let everything dry. Your handmade gift is ready. Small, personal, and made with a lot of effort.
