Cork Bat
When it gets dark outside, they flutter quietly through the night. Bats! Here you can make your own. You only need a cork, black construction paper, some craft wire, and googly eyes. While cutting, gluing, and tinkering, you’ll train your skills and imagination. You’ll learn how shapes are created and notice how small actions can have a big impact. In the end, your bat might hang in the window, gently spinning in the wind, reminding you that with imagination, you can create almost anything.
What you'll need
- Cork
- Black construction paper
- A pair of scissors
- A white colored pencil
- Googly eyes
- Craft wire
- Pricking needle
How it works

Fold one side of the black construction paper to the center. Draw a wing on that side and cut it out. The piece at the fold should remain intact! When you open the paper, you’ll have two identical wings.

Glue the wings onto the cork. Press them briefly until they hold. This creates the body of your bat.

Cut out two small ears from the construction paper and glue them onto the back of the cork. They should stick out a bit, making them lively, and your bat will hang upside down!

Glue on two googly eyes. You can place them close together or far apart; experiment to see what you like.

For hanging, use a pricking needle to poke two small holes at the top of the cork. Insert the ends of a piece of craft wire and twist them together slightly.

Now you can hang your bat, ready for takeoff!
