Carving a Pumpkin

In autumn, it's the special time for pumpkins. They grow big and round in gardens and fields. But they're not just for eating! For Halloween and beyond, many people carve faces or designs into pumpkins and place candles inside. They glow in the dark and look amazing. Some are funny, others a bit spooky. With a little help from an adult, you can create your own glowing pumpkin. It's a lovely way to celebrate autumn and be creative together.

What you'll need

Pumpkin
Carving kit
Water-soluble marker

How it works

Choose a pumpkin that is big enough and can stand firmly on the table without wobbling.
With a knife or a special pumpkin cutter (ask an adult for help), cut off the top to create an opening to remove the inside of the pumpkin later.
Now it gets a bit messy! Use a spoon to scoop out the soft insides and seeds from the pumpkin.
With a water-soluble marker, you can draw the face on the pumpkin beforehand. Think about whether your pumpkin should look funny or maybe even spooky.
Now take your pumpkin cutter or a small sharp knife (please with the help of an adult) and carefully cut along your drawing.
Place a small tealight inside your pumpkin, light it (also ask an adult for help), and put the lid back on. An LED tealight is even more practical.
Turn off the lights and admire your artwork! Ta-da, you've created your own glowing pumpkin! Have fun carving and show your pumpkin creations to your friends!
