Make Foam & Practice Words with SCH

You've probably played with foam before, in the bathtub or while washing your hands. But did you know you can easily make foam yourself? And even practice reading while doing it? When you play with foam, you learn words. Specifically: words with SCH. Like foam, ship, chocolate, butterfly, frog, cherries. Some you already know. Others might be new. And you'll notice: When you pull a word out of the foam with your fingers, it sticks better in your mind. Why does this work so well? Because you learn while you play. When you're done, you can dry the cards and reuse them next time. Or you can put them in a small box: your personal SCH treasure.

What you'll need

1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of flour
Children's shower gel
Whisk
Bowl
Optional food coloring

How it works

Pour 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of flour, and some shower gel into a bowl. Then it's time to stir, stir, stir! The more vigorously you stir, the more foam you create. The flour makes the foam particularly stable. If you want, you can color it, but be careful, or it will stain your fingers too.
Download the SCH word template here. Cut out the words and protect them with laminating film or wide adhesive tape to keep them dry. Now hide them in the foam. You can also write your own words or add pictures. Ready? Then start your search!
Pull a word out of the foam. Say it out loud. Do you recognize the SCH? How does it sound? Say it slowly again. You can also make a sentence with the word or write it down. If you want, invent a story: for example, about a frog that finds a treasure.
