How it works

  1. Fill a clean glass with 1/3 water and add a few drops of food coloring. Mix it well so that the color spreads evenly in the water.

  2. Now pour the oil into the glass until it's full. You'll see how the oil floats on top of the water. It doesn't mix with the water because oil and water have different properties. The particles in the oil are lighter and are not attracted to the particles in the water.

  3. Now add an effervescent tablet to the glass. Do you see how the tablet dissolves and creates little bubbles? The bubbles pick up the color and move in a cool way through the oil.

  4. The effervescent tablet contains sodium bicarbonate, which reacts with the oil and water to release carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a gas that occurs naturally. In this experiment, it makes the bubbles rise and fall. Isn't it a beautiful display?
