What you'll need

  • Garden spade
  • possibly a jar

How it works

  1. Put on weatherproof clothing and rubber boots, and grab a magnifying glass and a small notebook.

  2. After rain or on a damp day, head to the garden, park, or forest. Look for moist soil. Earthworms loosen the soil and help plants grow.

  3. Have you found an earthworm? Watch how it moves and digs. Earthworms move by contracting and relaxing their muscles.

  4. Draw the earthworm in your notebook and describe its movements and appearance. Earthworms are blind and deaf, but they can sense vibrations and changes in light.

  5. Imagine you are an earthworm and move around without seeing or hearing. Use your other senses to navigate.

  6. Earthworms are important helpers for the environment as they make the soil fertile. Gently return all earthworms to their natural habitat. Remember to respect and protect nature and its inhabitants. Share your discoveries with your friends!
