Did you know that hedgehogs hibernate in winter? When temperatures drop, they look for a warm place to sleep. You can help them! Together, build a hedgehog house in the fall, ideally between September and October. They need a sheltered spot to stay safe from predators and keep warm. And that's where you come in! Imagine you are the architects of a hedgehog house! One with a secret back room and a weatherproof roof. Sounds exciting, right? Will you join in to help the hedgehogs?

How it works

Start with two thick branches laid lengthwise, then place two thick branches across them. This creates a natural arch that forms the entrance for the hedgehog. A small entrance protects against larger animals that could harm the hedgehog.
Now place some thick branches so that a small sheltered space is created behind the entrance. This back room protects the hedgehog from curious cats.
Branches are not just for climbing! Lay more branches as a roof over the hedgehog house. This gives the house stability and protects it from rain.
A proper hedgehog house needs a cozy blanket of leaves. This keeps the hedgehog warm. So, lay a thick layer of leaves over the roof.
Now it's time for the plastic bag. Carefully place it over the leaves. This keeps the house dry, even when it rains outside. Make sure the entrance remains clear! Now add another layer of leaves over the plastic bag. This not only looks more natural but also provides more warmth.
Together, paint a sign that says "Hedgehog House" and place it in front of the entrance. This way, everyone knows who this special home belongs to. Done! And when winter comes, you can be proud that thanks to your help, a little hedgehog is sleeping warm and safe. Have fun building!
