Make Your Own Penguin Snack

Penguins live in very cold places, many of them at the South Pole. They can't fly, but they are strong swimmers. Underwater, they move almost like rockets. Their black backs help them hide in the sea, while their white bellies protect them from enemies below. Penguins often live in groups, huddling together to keep warm. These penguins are made from vegetables and small mozzarella balls. You plan, cut, assemble, and check if everything holds together. If something doesn't hold, you find a solution. That's exactly what researchers do too. In the end, you'll have delicious penguin snacks to share.

What you'll need

  • A carrot
  • Pitted black olives
  • Small mozzarella balls
  • Wooden skewers
  • Cutting board
  • Vegetable peeler and knife for kids

How it works

  1. Peel the carrot. Cut several slices. One slice will be the base. Cut a small triangle out of this slice to create the feet.

  2. Place a mozzarella ball on the carrot slice. Cut an olive in half lengthwise. Place the two halves on either side of the mozzarella to create wings.

  3. Place an olive horizontally on top of the mozzarella, with the hole facing forward. Insert the carrot triangle into the olive hole to create the beak. Carefully push a wooden skewer through all the parts from the top. Now your penguin is held together. Repeat the steps until all penguins are finished.

  4. Penguins don't have fur, but they have many dense feathers that keep them warm like a jacket. Count your penguins and share them. Eating together makes you strong, just like at your table and for the penguins at the South Pole.
