A Homework Worm Made of Beads for Your Focus

Sometimes it's not easy to stay focused, especially when doing homework. Your mind wants to wander, you feel restless, and everything takes twice as long. But guess what? You can learn to train your focus in a fun way! All you need is a bit of patience, a goal to look forward to, and a very special worm: your own homework worm. It grows with every round of focus you complete. And eventually? There’s a little reward. Maybe a game with mom or dad, an ice cream, or just a cozy moment together. Your worm reminds you: You can focus. You can do it!

What you'll need

  • beads
  • thread
  • scissors
  • large bead for the head
  • markers

How it works

  1. First, take a piece of ribbon or a pipe cleaner. This will be your focus worm's home. Then choose a large bead. This will be the head of your worm. String it on first. If you like, you can draw a friendly face on the worm with a marker.

  2. Now it’s time to get started. Sit down to do your homework. Set a timer for, say, 10 or 15 minutes. During this time, try to focus entirely on your task. No distractions, no getting up, no daydreaming. Just you and your task.

  3. When the time is up and you’ve stayed focused, you get a bead. You can string it onto your ribbon. Then comes the next round. Sometimes it goes really well, sometimes it’s tough. What’s important is: You’re practicing. And your worm shows you how far you’ve come.

  4. Once you’ve managed to string all 10 beads, meaning you’ve worked focused for 10 rounds, your homework worm is complete. Time for the little reward you’ve been looking forward to! You can discuss what that will be with mom, dad, or someone else beforehand.

  5. Maybe a card game, a visit to the ice cream shop, an afternoon in the park, or a nice movie night. The most important thing: You do something nice together. Because your perseverance is noticed and celebrated. You can start a new worm afterward or just keep stringing.

  6. Each bead is your proof that you persevered. That you stayed focused even when it was hard. And that’s a real superpower. Because you can practice focus just like juggling a ball, riding a bike, or swimming.

  7. With your homework worm, you have something in your hands that shows: 'I can do this.' And that makes you strong. Not just for school, but for everything else in life.
