Imagine being able to generate electricity with a potato and even make it audible! Sounds exciting, right? You can experience just that in this experiment. All you need is a potato, a few items, and your curiosity. Then it gets quiet, and suddenly, there it is! A faint crackling sound. At that moment, you've generated electricity from the potato! What you'll need

  • A potato
  • A copper coin
  • A zinc nail
  • A wired headphone

How it works

  1. Take the potato and carefully insert the coin and the nail. They should be close to each other but not touching.

  2. Hold the plug end of the headphones against the nail and the coin. Put on the headphones and listen. Do you hear a faint crackling? That's the electricity flowing through the potato!

  3. If you don't hear anything, try again. Maybe the coin and nail are too close or too far apart. Adjust them carefully and hold the headphones again.

  4. The liquid in the potato allows electrons (tiny particles) to flow back and forth between the coin and the nail. This flow creates a weak current that you can hear as a faint crackling in the headphones. This is how you make your own battery from a potato.
