Build a Volcano
Hey, little adventurers! Are you ready to make a real volcano erupt? No need to travel to a real volcano. You can build your own right here, even in a sandcastle! Get ready for an explosive fun time!
What you'll need
- 2 cups
- dish soap
- optional red food coloring
- vinegar
- baking soda
How it works

Start by building a large sandcastle. Leave space in the middle for an empty cup. Place the cup in the center of your sandcastle. The rim of the cup should stick out above the sand. Pour a packet of baking soda into the cup. This is the "crater" of your volcano.

Now fill the other cup with a few drops of dish soap and top it off with vinegar. Add optional red food coloring to make it look like real lava.

Now comes the exciting part! Pour the mixture into the cup with baking soda. And then... BOOM! Your sandcastle volcano erupts! The vinegar and baking soda mixture bubbles up and flows like real lava from the volcano.

Baking soda and vinegar react with each other and produce a gas. This gas wants to escape from the cup and pushes the mixture of baking soda and vinegar up and out of the cup. It looks like your volcano is spitting lava.
