What you'll need

  • 1 cup of warm milk (250ml)
  • 500g flour
  • Half a cube of yeast (21g)
  • 1 egg
  • Half a cup of sugar (70g)
  • Later: 1 tbsp milk & 1 egg yolk
  • Cup
  • Bowl
  • Kitchen towel
  • Scale
  • Teaspoon
  • Some pearl sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: jam, honey, and butter
  • Pastry brush

How it works

  1. Pour 250ml of warm milk into a large cup. Crumble the half cube of fresh yeast (21g) into it and stir with a spoon until everything is dissolved. Now add a teaspoon of sugar and set the mixture aside for 10 minutes. Watch: If small bubbles form, the yeast is alive!

  2. Get a large bowl. Add 500g of flour, half a cup of sugar (about 70g), a pinch of salt, 1 egg, and 70g of soft butter in pieces. Pour in the yeast milk. Now it's time to knead! Knead until the dough is smooth. Now you have your yeast dough!

  3. Put the yeast dough back into the bowl. Cover it with a towel. The dough needs warmth now. Place it in a warm spot. And now wait. At least an hour. Check back occasionally. The dough will grow. The yeast is working! You can watch the dough rise. Almost like magic.

  4. When the dough has doubled in size, take it out of the bowl and place it on a floured surface. Divide it into three equal pieces and roll them into three long strands.

  5. Now it’s time to braid: Place the strands next to each other. Pinch them together at the top. Then braid like hair, right over the middle, left over the middle, alternating. When you reach the bottom, pinch the ends together again. You've just braided your own bread!

  6. Place the braid on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover it loosely with a towel again. Now let it rest for another 30 minutes. In the meantime, you can clean up. Or think about what you want to eat with it later. Jam? Butter? Honey? Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

  7. Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of milk. Brush your braid with it to make it golden brown and shiny. Then sprinkle pearl sugar on top. Now the braid goes in the oven for 25 minutes. Ask an adult for help. Let it cool a bit. Then: Taste it! Delicious!
