What you'll need

  • Table tennis table
  • Table tennis paddles
  • Table tennis balls
  • Alternatively, a dining table for practice

How it works

  1. Find a table that is about the size of a table tennis table. If you don't have a table tennis table, you can use a regular dining table. Make sure there is enough space around it so you can move.

  2. You need a net to divide the table in half. If you don't have a real table tennis net, you can stretch a ribbon or string across the table. Ensure the net is about in the middle of the table and at the right height (about 15 cm).

  3. Each player needs a table tennis paddle. If you don't have real paddles, you can improvise with sturdy cardboard pieces or flat wooden pieces. Make sure you have a table tennis ball. It's light and bounces well.

  4. Rules and tips for playing: The serve starts with the ball in an open hand. Toss the ball up and then hit it so that it first lands on your side of the table and then on your opponent's side.

  5. The ball must alternate sides after the serve. When the ball comes to your side, you must hit it back before it bounces more than once.

  6. You score a point if your opponent cannot return the ball, if the ball goes into the net, or if the ball is hit out by your opponent.

  7. Tips: Hold the paddle firmly but not too stiff. Your hand should feel relaxed. Always be ready to move. Table tennis is a fast game, and you need to react quickly. So grab a paddle and give it a try!
