Apple Picking

Apple Picking

🎂 from 3 years years ⏱️ 30 min 📍 Orchard ⭐ medium

Imagine walking through a meadow with a basket. Above you, trees filled with apples reach up to the sky. Some shine red, others are green. Apples hide among the leaves like treasures, just waiting for you to discover them. This is what apple picking feels like as a micro-adventure. Many farms invite families to pick their own apples. It’s fun, you’re outdoors in nature, and in the end, you not only have a full basket but also many experiences to cherish.

How it works

  1. Many farms or orchards offer 'pick-your-own' options. Check online or ask around your area. Look up in advance so you know when the apples are ripe.

  2. Hold the apple in your hand, twist it slightly upwards and to the side. This will help it come off easily. Take a freshly picked apple and taste it. Is it sweet? Sour? Crunchy?

  3. Take a closer look at your harvest. Some apples are red striped, others are grass green. Maybe someone from the farm will explain the varieties to you: Elstar, Boskoop, Jonagold…

  4. Find a meadow or a bench on the farm. Enjoy fresh apples straight from your basket. Farms often have playgrounds or animals too.

  5. At home, sort your apples. Firm, undamaged apples stay fresh longer if they are kept cool and airy. Best in a box in the cellar. Apples with bruises should be eaten or processed quickly.

  6. What will you make with your apples? Slice them for a fruit platter. Bake apple muffins or apple pie. Make applesauce. Press juice. Maybe you’ll invent your own recipe.
